Operational Improvements - Design Build

New York City Housing Authority Improves operations and pays for alterations from resulting savings

Boorom designed and acted as the installation contractor for a state-of-the-art central boiler plant installed for the New York City Housing Authority.

Working with Battelle, Boorom developed a DSOM (Decision Support for Operations Maintenance) system for apartment buildings for the housing authority. The load-driven sequencing of six 350 hp O2 trimmed boilers matches needed plant capacity against actual building demand. The success of the pilot project is expected to lead to retrofitting of additional sites in the future. An article highlighting this project appears in the June issue of Mechanical Engineering Power magazine as a state of the art system installed by Boorom at the New York City Housing Authority.

New York City Housing Authority

The New York City Housing Authority contracted with Battelle to develop a “state of the art” system to improve operations of a central boiler plant and its connected apartment buildings. The result, code named DSOM, which stands for Decision Support for Operations and Maintenance, provides “load driven” sequencing of six-350hp O2 trimmed boilers, matching needed plant capacity against actual building demand. The subsequent energy savings generated a three (3) year simple payback with the added benefit of higher reliability, remote graphical control, and predicted preventative maintenance. Boorom provided final design drawings and acted as the installation contractor. The success of this pilot project expects to support retrofitting additional sites in the future.
